Notes from the Sermon, Sunday 2/7/21
Notes from this Sunday’s Sermon by the Rev. Dr. Richard Swanson:
Prayer means connecting with God. The result of prayer is finding a sense of purpose in life.
As Christians, we have been baptized with the sign of the cross and marked as Christ’s own forever. We believe that life has meaning. We find that meaning through prayer. We sometimes forget our baptism and need to come back to God. We need to read the bible, we need to read the gospels, and we need to stay in touch with God through prayer.
One of his seminary professors once shared this idea, “Justice is love distributed.” Think about that. Love is personal, but it also has cosmic dimensions, and justice is love distributed.
In today’s gospel Jesus shows how important it was for him to stay in touch with God through prayer. In the Gospel of Mark, we see Jesus and the disciples return time and again to God in prayer. Jesus needed to stay in contact with God, and so do we. What Jesus did, he did because of his relationship with God. Many of us can do things we never thought were possible for us when we stay in touch with God through prayer.
