Music Video: If Ye Love Me
We hope that this finds you safe and well.
Here is a video our choir created nearly a year ago: If Ye Love Me by Thomas Tallis.
The piece has an interesting history. It is a setting of a passage from the Gospel of John. The lyrics relate words spoken by Jesus to his disciples foretelling his own death, but also sharing the promise that God would send to them the Holy Spirit (a "Comforter"). The song was first published in 1565, during the reign of Elizabeth I. The text is taken from William Tyndale's translation of the Bible, which was used by the Church of England during the English Reformation.
If ye love me, keep my commandments.
And I will pray the Father,
and he shall give you another comforter,
that he may 'bide with you forever;
E'en the sp'rit of truth.
— John 14:15–17
